Why I think Umaru will be a good President

By Senator Ike Omar Sanda Nwachukwu, GCMG, CFR, COM, mni
    Former Minister of  Foreign Affairs
    March, 2007

I have no doubt that Umaru's family background and personal experiences have more than prepared him for the job ahead. Born into a political family, his father served as a minister under the government of Alhaji Tafawa Balewa and he worked closely with his late brother Shehu Musa Yar Adua (former chief of Staff to the President); both influences were not lost to Umaru in his early political grooming. Umaru has also served as a governor for eight years and his performance as governor is indicative of some early familiarization with the vagaries of power, its reformative capacities and the need for a distinctive political orientation which is people centered. Undoubtedly, he also got exposed to the leftist sloganization of power under the defunct Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU)- a left of centre party.

I particularly think given our situation in Nigeria today, Umaru's integrity, astuteness, decisiveness and yet humble and accommodating personality will be crucial in resolving many of the challenges of governance arising from 8 years of rigorous economic reforms under President Olusegun Obasanjo. With the combined energy of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, I firmly believe that his avowed position on the respect of the rule of law, freedom of expression and the rights of the component parts of Nigeria to find their voice within the federation will work to further entrench our strength in diversity.

I see a vote for the duo of Yar Adua and Goodluck as a vote for the prosperity of every Nigerian, peace, development and security for Nigeria.

I will make Nigeria a great nation, Yar'Adua

Governor Umar Musa Yar'Adua, the presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has assured that his immediate challenge when elected into power in the next month elections will be restore Nigeria to the status of great nation. Yar'Adua said this yesterday, while speaking at the grand finale rally of the PDP in Eagle Square, Abuja, noted that this challenge that all Nigerians must get involved in as it is an imperative.

"I am appealing to all Nigerians to join hands with us in the PDP to make Nigeria a country that will be the pride of the world. The challenges before us are enormous but the problems have been identified and the solutions have been defined in such a way that it will take us to the league of the twenty first century developed countries of the world", he said.

Yar'Adua also told teeming PDP supporters that thronged the venue of the rally that as the Nigerian President he will be fair to all and will not discriminate against anyone on the basis of religion or ethnicity, stressing that for "For me, a Nigerian is a good Nigerian". While urging Nigerians to make a choice between making a giant leap forward in terms of development in all its ramifications or going backwards to where the nation was in the years gone by, adding that a vote for the PDP is a vote for development and progress.

The PDP Presidential flag bearer at the commencement of his campaign flag-off in Lagos January 28, 2007 had hinged the core of the campaign message on the Seven- Point-Agenda, which seeks to make the country among 20 leading nations in the world.

Markarfi Welcomes AC, ANPP Decampees to PDP
From George Oji in Kaduna, 03.17.2007

At a colourful ceremony held at the Gamji Gate Auditorium, Kaduna recently, Governor Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi received about 1,500 decampees from the Action Congress (AC) and the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) who decamped to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the State. Erstwhile AC National Secretary and one-time Kaduna State Secretary of the Defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) Engr. Umaru Kabirat was among the decampees. Also last week, about 500 decampees from Zaria were welcomed to the PDP by the gubernatorial candidate of PDP in Kaduna State.

While receiving the decampees Makarfi likened their earlier defection from the party to the story of the Biblical prodigal son, whom after leaving his parents decided to come back home remorseful.
